Cost Of Laser Hair Removal: Avoiding Scams
By Mireille G
Many doctors whose practice is specializing in laser hair removal have standard prices for laser hair removal based on a couple of factors. First the geographic area, where the practice is located, and the length of time that it will take to perform a session.
A laser practitioner cannot really tell ahead of time, what the total cost will be for your situation. That is why they quote by sessions rather than a total amount for permanent hair removal. It is common to have to attend 4 to 6 sessions, because the sessions are based on the cycle of hair growth.
To speak of actual costs let's take a practical example. If you choose to have hair removed by laser from your upper lip, one session will probably last about 15 minutes and depending on your geographic area, it could cost from $50 to $100 or even $150. Since several sessions will be needed, you will need to multiply that by the number of sessions to get the final cost. A bikini area being much larger you could expect to pay from $150 to $250 per session. Again several sessions will be required to achieve complete and permanent hair removal.
Some clinics offer package deals, or discounts. Individual doctors sometimes have coupons offers in newspapers or even on line, it can be advantageous to ask for a better price, if you can. It is sometimes possible to get a reduced price when treatment is sought for more than one area of the body, since they can be done at the same time, doctors are more willing to offer a better deal.
It is important to contact a laser hair removal specialist in your area to get an accurate cost of treatment, and to have a pre-interview so that the person doing the hair removal can test your skin and hair to determine how well you will respond to treatment.
Not All Practitioners Are The Same
Most doctors who operate a laser hair removal clinic are professionals, and will serve you well, but a few less than respectable places have also sprung up in many areas, that do not follow the best ethical practices. You should be harmed with a few facts not to fall prey to these unscrupulous practitioners.
Here are some of the practices to watch out for, in order to protect yourself and your wallet from excessive cost of laser hair removal.
You could be billed for treatment to an entire area, when in fact only a small part of the area was treated. For example you might have had hair removed on the inside of the thighs, and you were billed for the entire thigh.
Another less than honest practice is to set the laser at a power insufficient to do the job correctly the first time. Less hair is removed that should be and more sessions are needed.
Sometimes the problem can be that the technician is not well trained and forgets to increase the power on the laser during sessions near the end of the treatment. When you reach the later sessions hair that remains is very thin and sparse, for that reason the laser needs more power to remove it. Once more this would result in your needing one more session than necessary.
It is common practice in reputable clinic to evaluate how treatment is going after the 3rd session. At that time the doctor can tell you how treatment is going and the possible outcome. This could be the point where if you had no chance of success to quit, but some places will not tell you that, thus keeping you in a treatment that is not effective. (10 % of people will not see good results and are poor candidate for laser hair removal.)
While the growth of hair has a cycle and sessions can be planned around this cycle, it can happen that you need more time, at some point between sessions because your hair has not grown enough. When that happens your laser hair removal technician should be willing to extend the time between sessions.
No matter how permanent laser hair removal is, there will be in the years following treatment when a touch up session will be needed. Reputable clinics offer a discount on those touch up sessions, up to 20 to 30% is not unusual.
Because laser hair removal is an expensive treatment not taken in charge by most insurance, you should inform yourself before starting treatment, and your doctor should be willing to help you keep costs down as much as possible.
Reputation Matters
It is important to choose a place that has a good reputation to have this medical procedure done, and to be well prepared in advance to minimize your costs.
Regardless of where you will have your treatment performed, it should be supervised by a doctor. The technician doing the actual hair removal does not have to be a doctor, but you should talk to a doctor before treatment begins, and sometime during the treatment. A serious Evaluation should be done by the doctor before treatment so that all safety measures can be taken.
People using laser hair removal equipment require special training, anyone can operate this equipment but you should not have an inexperienced operator work on you.
A pre-treatment interview is usually conducted by the doctor, during which your medical history will be discussed. You will have to answer questions about bleeding, allergies, medications you are taking, just as you would for any other medical procedure. This step in the treatment is not to be taken lightly and should not be skipped. If the clinic does not conduct this interview, we would recommend that you look for another place to seek treatment.
Laser hair removal equipment vary greatly. This type of equipment has been around since the 70's and has seen tremendous technology improvements over the last decades. The new technology has made laser hair removal much more affordable, but it has also allowed a number of shady operators to open clinics. Do not think that new equipment will always give better results, some older machines are much more reliable.
Just as the use of the proper equipment is important, the maintenance of said equipment is equally important. Lasers can only work properly if they deliver the pulse needed, and must be calibrated accordingly. A reputable clinic will have a choice of machines, as some will work better for different types of hair.
Lastly I would say that laser hair removal treatment is a popular procedure for both men and women today, but it is still a medical procedure and information is your best ally. You should ask questions from your practitioner, and you should get all your questions answered to your satisfaction before signing a consent form.
